Reef Restoration & Geological Exploration
Protect the ocean by restoring its home
Reef Restoration & Geological Exploration
This hands-on educational adventure combines two fascinating worlds: marine life and the geological story of Cozumel. You’ll begin with an introduction to the Cozumel Reef Restoration Program, which has been actively working to protect and restore local reefs for over 10 years.
Learn about coral reef ecology, their importance to marine life, and current restoration techniques. Then, snorkel at an active reef restoration site to witness the recovery of these fragile ecosystems firsthand.
The second part of the activity focuses on Cozumel’s geological evolution — from ancient fossilized reefs to cenotes and the underground forces that shaped the island. You’ll also engage in rock and mineral identification activities that help deepen your understanding of the natural world around you.
